Lightweight Midlands area Champ
Marcus Ffrench
Marcus Ffrench is the current lightweight Midlands area champion and is impressing a lot of people with his power and boxing skills. Marcus 33 and at 5 foot 5 is a Mike Tyson type of boxer who’s professional boxing record stands at an Impressive 13 wins out of 15 contests with only 2 defeats. Marcus also know as Ffrenchy had over 30 amateur fights and trains at Eastside gym in Birmingham.
Marcus informed me his main trainers are Paul Soggy Counihan and Louie Counihan and he has been boxing for 8 years.
I asked Marcus what inspired him to take up the noble art? Ffrenchy told me “keeping fit is what inspired me to take up boxing”.
I then asked Marcus, what had been his hardest fight to date? Marcus replied “fighting Calum Copper was my hardest fight”.

Marcus added that he had just recently fought and did not know when his next fight will be, but he is hoping for a English or British title shot.
After talking to Marcus I asked Paul Soggy Counihan one of his main trainers what he thought about Ffrenchy.
Paul said “He has had a great season everybody knows if you pay to watch Marcus then you will get your money's worth. His exciting to watch, he loves training me and my son Louie have to hold him back from training to hard. If he does his weight properly then he will test any lightweight in the country, if he cheats on his weight then you can see it in his performance, against Rooney we knew that we had to make his weight properly because we knew on paper it was a 50/50 fight and we knew they would be confident because of there last spar together Rooney got the better of it, but Ffrenchy very rarely spars great. Ffrenchy did his weight brilliant and came in 2lbs inside but it's not just making weight it's making sure Ffrenchy doesn't walk to the ring to heavy as well. We allowed him to walk to the ring 10st 2lbs and we knew he would give any lightweight a good fight when he does things correct. It showed in that fight what he can do, we kept him active with a routine fight against Ali Wyatt on MGM show and looked good putting Wyatt down and hurting him a couple of times, and now looking to get him a big fight in the near future which he deserves.
Dexter's Thoughts
I have just watched Marcus fight for the lightweight Midlands area title on YouTube, wow what a shot to end the fight so early against a capable opponent in Michael Rooney. Marcus at 33,has not got time on his side but he does fight like a much younger man and hopefully he can capture the English or preferably the British title in his next few fights.
