Eggington and Gavin wins set up Battle of Brum
Sam Eggington and Frankie Gavin both played their part in setting up a Battle of Brum after both earning stoppage victories.
The two Birmingham welterweights proved too strong for their opponents on the under card of Josh Warrington v Patrick Hyland in Leeds on Saturday night.
Eggington got back to his explosive best by destroying Daza Usher in under 2 minutes, landing a barrage of punches on the ropes, before the referee stopped the fight.
Gavin was having his first fight since losing to Kell Brook last year and took slightly longer to get rid of Croatian Ivo Gogosevic, the fight stopped in the sixth and final round.
The 2 Birmingham boxers wins could now set up a Battle of Brum on October 22nd of this year. This match was supposed to have happened last October but didn't due to Issues outside the ring keeping Frankie from fighting.

Eggington said “The Gavin fight is a tough one, I can either wait a year, have a few fights which are good fights but would be paving the same path or I can fight Frankie, beat him, and I am back to where I was before I lost to Bradley Skeete. I am all about the fast route, the quickest route back to where I was, and a win over Frankie puts me back there.
“I would love to win the British title outright but I want the rematch with Bradley more than anything. Beggars can’t be choosers and I am going to have to work my way back up and if it comes again hopefully it would be a different outcome.
“You could say the Frankie fight is bigger with it being a local derby in Birmingham – it will be a bigger fight for the fans”.
Gavin comment was “I really can’t wait to get back in there, this has been the toughest part of my career so far. I’ve been out of the ring 15 months now, there has been a lot going on outside the ring with my team”.
“I’ve linked up with Max, I’ve known him for years, but we had only spoke for a matter of minutes before I went down the gym for my first session with him. We clicked immediately, Max tells you exactly how it is, he doesn’t mince his words and I respect that”.
“I was ringside in March for Sam’s fight against Bradley, it went exactly how I predicted it would. I knew that Skeete would win comfortably, he didn’t step out of second gear. Sam can fight and is a tough kid but boxing-wise he is technically poor. I’m very confident ahead of that fight”.
“Once I beat Sam, I just want the big fights, that’s the stage of my career I’m at. I’ve had a World title shot and I’d love another crack. That is my sole focus or to face a massive international name in my division.”
I contacted friend of the column and one of Sam’s trainers Jon Pegg to ask him how he thought this fight would go and did they have a date? Jon informed me “The date is 22nd of October we have agreed to it, I'm not sure about other side but Sam is ready to go. After seeing the improvement in Sam’s training and sparring and his 93 second destruction of Darren Usher (a very good domestic opposition with a winning record and a couple of KO’s wins over unbeaten British opposition) myself and the team of Paul Counihan , Louie Counihan and Spencer Mccracken are very confident that Sam will be too strong big and hard punching in what will be a tough bout, but we have taken it as we are happy with how we think it will go. We may get Sam another fight before then as a minute and a half isn’t enough, the trouble is with the way Sam is looking unless we go for real top level opposition i think we will struggle to get much longer than from the opposition”.
Dexter's Thoughts
Gavin v Eggington has the potential to be a great fight, both boxers won convincingly in Leeds. Gavin 30, with a record of 25 fights, 23 wins 14 coming by the way of knock out has fought at the highest level and has got more experience.
Egginton 22, with a record of 21 fights 18 wins 10 coming by knock out is hungry and is looking to put the defeat to Bradley Skeete for his British and Commonwealth titles behind him. Sam has a great team behind him who believe in his ability and that he will beat Gavin.
Gavin himself has to put the defeat against Kell Brook for the world title behind him an I think both there victories in Leeds have got some of the ring rust off.
I think it is going to be a close fight 50/50 but if I had to put money on it or a gun to my head, I would have to go for Frankie “Funtime” Gavin on a close points verdict.
.This is a show I can't wait to see and will happily pay for a ticket to Witness the Battle of Brum but if a promoter or fighter wants to give the bbcolumn a few tickets that would be a great help
