Big Fights already announced
for Birmingham’s Finest
We are just entering February of 2017 and there has already been 3 massive announcements for Birmingham boxing.
The first big fight will be on the 4th March at the O2 Arena London on the Haye v Bellew show where Birmingham’s welterweight Sam Eggington will put his WBC International title on the line against veteran Newyorker Paulie Malignaggi.
April 22nd will see Midlander Tommy Langford defend his British title for the first time against Birmingham’s own Cinderella man Craig Cunningham at Leicester Arena Leicester.
Also announced Kal Yafai’s home coming show on 13th May at the Barclaycard Arena Birmingham where Kal will be defending his WBA Super- Featherweight title. I have also been informed that Sean Davis will be having a big fight on Kal’s homecoming show.
With these big fights already announced and with all the small hall events being held over Birmingham and the Black Country this year by the likes of Tommy Owen Promotions, MGM Birmingham and Errol Johnson and UKO boxing 2017 is already looking like a great year for Birmingham and Black Country boxing.
Dexter’s Thoughts
There are some big fights coming up for the cream of the Boxers in Birmingham. Eggington defending his WBC International title against the highly rated and very experienced Paulie “Magic man” Malignaggi this will be a cracking fight. I think “The Savage” Eggington will be way to much for ‘The Magic Man” over 12 rounds and I can see Sam stopping Malignaggi late in the fight.
You then have Langford v Cunningham for the British title, this was on the Birmingham boxing column’s wish list for fights this year. This is going to be a hard fight, Langford is a very very talented boxer and is the favorite to win and also the champ, but I believe after seeing what Craig achieved last year winning 3 belts in proper hard fights and upsetting the odds against Ogogo I have a feeling that Cunningham can bring the British title to Brum. Craig showed everyone last year what hard work dedication and having a lot of heart can bring you and I think he can do it again.
Kal Yafai’s homecoming will be the first big show in Birmingham this year, it is looking like a great night at the Barclaycard arena with Kal defending his WBA world title and I'm sure there will be a great under-card with lots of local talent on it. I have heard that Sean Davis the WBC International super Bantamweight title holder maybe fighting as well. With these big fights and then you add all the small hall shows put on by Tommy Owens Promotions, MGM Birmingham, Errol Johnson and UKO Boxing around Birmingham and the Black Country, the Birmingham boxing column is going to have a lot to write about this year.
