The Quite Man Gethin Retires
The Quite Man Martin Gethin has taken the "very difficult" decision to hang up his gloves and retire from professional boxing.
The 33-year-old from Walsall announced the news after his third round stoppage loss to Jack Catterall on Saturday night (8/4/17), bringing a hugely successful 13 year professional career to an end.
Gethin said "When you have been going on for so long I think you just hit a wall, I think it is the end for me now. I finished with a big fight. It was not the way I wanted to go but if I had got the win I'm not sure I would have known when to leave the sport. I might have carried on for that world title shot”.
Martin continued "It was a very difficult decision, I have been boxing since the age of six. It is hard because I enjoyed the training and the laughs in the gym and the atmosphere of a big fight. It feels weird not preparing for a fight. I don't think it has quite sunk in, I think it will take a couple of months."
Gethin has had a great career seeing him win 28 fights out of 38 drawing 1 and having 12 knockouts to his name. In his 38 fights he won a English and British title and 2 IBF titles and just fell short in world title eliminator at Walsall town hall against Ammeth Diaz.
Martin was also picked to to fight in Las Vagas on the Maywether v Hatton show where he got to weigh in, in front of thousand and fighting on Sky sports.
Looking back on his career Martin said "Its has been the best time of my life as I didn't think I would get this far,I never expected to achieve as much as I have and I did it the hard way, going on the road and boxing away from home. I am really happy with the titles I have won; the British, English title, the IBF at two different weights and the Midlands title as well as others. I was really happy to put Walsall on the map and represent the area on big shows. I have had a lot of support. My wife has supported me loads, putting up with my moans and groans when I have been making weight”.
Dexter’s Thoughts
Martin has had a great career and has been a true professional threw out. He has won multiple titles and has fought at the highest level, he has had a career that he can look back on and be very proud of. I watched Gethin fight at Walsall Town hall in his penultimate fight, which at the time was supposed to be his final one which he won so convincingly he made the decision to have one more. Martin is a credit to Midlands and British Boxing and put Walsall on the boxing map with his illustrious career.
