You Asked For It

30/09/2017

BCB promotions presented a night of professional boxing at Walsall Town Hall on Saturday 30th October. The show consisted of 6 bouts of boxing with one female match of four 2 minute rounds, two four 3 minute rounders, two six rounder’s and the main event which was for the Midlands area middleweight title. With a packed out Walsall town hall the Birmingham Boxing Column was set to report on a great night of boxing.

Fight 1

Lauren Johnson v Borislava Goranov

11-4 4x2 11-3

Middleweight

Johnson controlled the centre of the ring and got her jab working from the start. Goranova who has had over 60 bouts of boxing moved well but was out worked in the first. The second round was another round controlled by Johnson, the black widow seemed to be frustrated that Goranova wasn’t giving her a better fight. The third saw Goranova make a better account of herself having a go at Johnson. Johnson replied and again controlled the round. In the final round Goranova moved well around the ring but only to stay away from the Black Widow who staked her down and won the round easy.

Result

Dexter – 40-36

Ref – 40-37

Johnson wins on points

Fight 2

Luke Caci v Curtis’s Garga

12-5 4x3 12.10

Light Heavyweight

Caci’s jab was solid and looked sharp, Garvan covered up well and got some good body shots off when he did attack. Caci won this just on his work rate. It was Caci’s jab again which was the telling punch in the second, Caci shit it out setting up some great combinations from it. The third saw Caci bang in some cracking body shots which seemed to wake Gargano up, Gargano started to taunt Caci which just made Caci hit him even more. In the final round Caci showed some great shot selection and movement, Gargano was always a danger with his big over hand rights, but the 3 and 0 fighter from Newcastle under Line controlled the round finishing strong and making it 4 without defeat.

Fight 3

James Beech Jnr v Russ Midg

9-4 6x3 9-1

Featherweight

Midgley started brightly and looked like he was going to test the very talented Beech. As the round went on Beech banged in some cracking body shots that made Midgley think twice. Great speed and movement from Beech. Every combination Beech threw in the second ended with a hurtful body shot, Beech got his man down right at the end of this round with a arking right hand. Midgley took a 8 count off the ref after the bell rang. In the third Beech went out from the start with one intent to stop his opponent. The ref stopped the fight 40 seconds into the third round as Beech overwhelmed Midgley with a barrage of rights and lefts.

Fight 4

Kyle Williams v Sergi Tasimov

8.5 6x3 8.2

Bantamweight

Williams went through the gears in the first round mixing it up with Tasimov at the start, but catching him with some eye catching combination and big rights. Tasimov showed great heart in the second and I was shocked he saw the end of it. Williams went to town on him catching him with heavy combinations and some cracking right hands. It was the same again in the third as Williams banged in some great combinations, the ref could have stepped in several times as Williams dominated.

Williams seemed to ease off in the forth and 5th, he picked his shots well winning both rounds convincingly. Williams got some cracking shots off in the final rounds looking for that stoppage victory, but try as he might he couldn’t get that knockout shot to land cleanly.

Fight 5

Danny Ball v MJ Hall

11.1 4x3 10.13

Middleweight

Ball won the first round with the better shots and work rate, Hall kept it interesting as he battled back to stay in the fight. The second was controlled by Ball with some good shots. Hall continued to battle and got some shots of his own off. The third saw Ball pile the pressure on banging in some good shots, Hall took them and came back with some of his own. The round finished with a great rally by both fighters but Ball came out on top. In the final round Ball took control banging in some heavy shots and even knocked Hall’s gum shield out. Hall who had fought valiantly had to cover up to see the round out.

Fight 6

Main Event

Tom Stokes v Tyler Denny

Middleweight

Denny took a close first round with some eye catching southpaw straight lefts. The second was another close round with both fighters having success, Denny nicked the round again with some great left hands. Stokes seemed to be struggling to deal with Denny’s laid back south paw style. Denny again nicked a close round with a cracking burst just before the bell.

The forth round was a cracker, Stokes had seemed to have got his range and caught Denny with some viscous shots. Denny replayed with heavy shots of his own to make the round even. The 5th saw Stokes put the pressure on but was again getting caught with the straight south paw left. Stokes had his joy in this round but seemed to be wobbled right at the end of the round by a Denny left hook. Stokes started the sixth round well, but Denny got some cracking shots off to win the round.

Stokes picked up the pace in the seventh and banged in some cracking combination and body shots. Denny fought back hard but was starting to look tired, with Stokes winning his first round. Stokes poured on the pressure in round eight, Denny again fought back well but seemed to be running out of steam. Round nine was Stokes best round, Denny battled through a tough round as Stokes looked to end the fight. Stokes caught Denny with several heavy shots that could have finished the fight but Denny stood firm. In the final round saw Denny show great heart and determination as both boxers went for it, both fighter gave as good as they got to end a great bouts of championship boxing.

Result

Dexter – 85 – 87

Ref – 84 – 86

Denny wins the Midlands area middleweight title on points.

I Contacted Denny after the fight and asked him how he thought the fight went? he informed me "I always felt in control, I believe I had a decent lead at half way stage, he came back strong towards the end and I think I lost rounds 8 and 9 but came back and won the 10th. I'm hoping I can move on from Midlands level and get a big fight but time will tell".

Dexter Thoughts

What a great night of boxing, Black Country Boxing really put on a great show at the Walsall town hall. Every fight was competitive and the boxers supporters made for a great atmosphere. Congratulations to female boxer Lauren Johnson for winning her second fight, also Caci and Ball who put on great displays winning their 4 rounder’s. I thought Kyle Williams looked fantastic in his 6 rounder keeping his unbeaten record making it 5 without defeat. A big well done to the very talented young fighter James Beech Jnr who blew his opponent away in 3 rounds with a great display of boxing. I said it after I watch his first fight at Tudor Grange that this kid is one to definitely watch out for and as he takes his record to 4 without defeat and is already moving up to six rounder’s I can only see good thing happening for Beech.

If the night had not been great already, the main event was a cracker, a true 50/50 fight that

lived up to its expectations. Denny won a fight of 2 half’s with Denny winning on my cards 5 out of the first 6 rounds and drawing the other, Stokes came back into it getting rounds 7,8 and 9th this was truly a great fight for the Midlands area middleweight title. Denny was a deserved winner and his style reminded me very much of fellow southpaw Craig Cunningham, he looked very relaxed when in the ring and used his south paw stance to great effect.

The Birmingham Boxing Column would like to thank the BCB for having us their and we are very much looking forward to their back 2 back shows on the 14th and 15th of October at Walsall Town Hall.
