Hennessy Sports held there first show since Lockdown with fighter from Birmingham and the Black Country represented on the undercard and in the main event.
Kicking off the show you had ‘The One and Only’ Mr Love Island Idris Virgo taking on fellow Brummie and the peoples favourite Josh Hodgins. After being very out spoken in the press conference which turned into a water fight Virgo backed up his arrogance with a cracking left hook body shot to the liver halfway through the first round. Hodgins came out and put the pressure on from the start but was caught with the evil body shot 1 minute and 40 seconds into the first round that stopped the Bandit for the first time in his boxing career in the pros and 60 unlicensed fights. This was Virgo's first stoppage in his pro career.
Wolverhampton’s Anthony Woolery and his BcB team rolled the dice in a short notice fight against Isaac Chamberlain In a 8 round Heavyweight contest. Woolery started brightly and really put it on Chamberlain, Chamberlain who had been out of the ring for two years looked rusty in the first, but by the second he had shook it off. Chamberlain controlled the second with a sharp jab fighting from range and picking off the much shorter Woolery. The end came in the third when Chamberlain continued to control the distance and caught Woolery with some heavy shots but dropped Woolery with an evil body shot 1 minute and 27 seconds into the third.
Also on the show was a cracking 6 rounder in the super Welterweight division between BcB's Conah Walker and late replacement Nathan Bendon due to Kaisee Benjamin having to pull out due to illness. This was the second time these fighters had met in the ring with Walker winning the first fight which had been mentioned in the Bbcolumn’s awards as a potential fight of the year. This fight lived up to the first with Bendon bringing it to Walker and Walker answering with a great performance. At the end of the six rounds the referee gave the fight to Walker scoring it 60 to 54.
Dexter’s Thoughts
On this Hennessy show we have witnessed some of the best fighters Birmingham and the Black Country has to offer. We start with Idris Virgo against Josh Hodgins, Idris was very outspoken before the fight in the press conference not even recognising Hodgins by his name just by number 7. They both then sprayed water on each other to add some spice to this 4 round fight. Virgo backed up his arrogance with an evil body shot which put Hodgins down for the first time ever. I really think now it is time for ‘The one and only’ Idris Virgo to fight someone with a positive record and prove he is as good as he thinks he is. Maybe he could fight for a Midlands area title and fighter number 8 could be a real challenge for Virgo. As for Hodgins all I can say is ‘shit happens' he was caught with the perfect body shot and that’s all that needs to be said, Hodgins came into boxing to be a journeyman and fluff up prospects records and that’s what he did. He needs to learn from this and move on to the next one.
Anthony Woolery and his team rolled the dice in this one against Chamberlain. Woolery had a real good go in the first but when Chamberlain shook off the ring rust and got his range the writing was on the wall. This was great exposure for Woolery and a good pay day and I’m sure he will come again.
It would of been great if they had shown the Walker, Bendon fight in full on the TV but unfortunately we only got the last three rounds. I have been told it lived up to the first one and from what I saw in the last three rounds it did. Walker is now looking at taking on Kaisee Benjamin for the Welterweight Midlands area title in the near future which could be as soon as September and be on channel 5 again. It was gutting to hear the news about Benjamin having to pull out due to illness, but when these two warriors do meet I can say this is going to be a cracker.
