D'Animal Andrew Robinson has at last been give his shot at the British Middleweight title. Robinson (35) was made mandatory for the Middleweight title last year and has waited a long time for his shot. D'Animal will taking on current champ Liam Williams who has an impressive record of 22 win 2 defeats and 1 draw, this will be Williams second defence of the British after he beat Mark Heffron at the end of 2018 for the vacant title. Williams then defended it against Joe Mullender with a second round KO, he has since added the WBC Silver and the WBO intercontinental Middleweight title’s to his collection. Williams has also won the British title, the WBO European title at super Welterweight and has fought for the interim WBO world super Welterweight where he lost to Liam Smith. Robinson (24-4-1) has fought for the WBO European Super Middleweight, the English Middleweight, WBC International Middleweight and has won the Midlands super Middleweight and the IBO continental Middleweight titles.
The fight will live on BT sports and is a Queensberry promotions show on the 10th October and will be more than likely behind close doors.
Also on this packed out show will be Walsall's Shaun Cooper, known as 'The Scorpion' the 23 year has an impressive record of 10 wins with just 1 defeat. His best win to date is in a 10 rounder against the much fancied Boy Jones which was meant to be for the WBO Lightweight title, Cooper missed out on the title due to being a few ounces over weight. Coopers only defeat came against the unbearen 'No Beef' Jack O’Keeffe when he was stopped in the 4th round as they contested for the Midlands Lightweight area title. Cooper who is now under the tutelage of former British champ Martin Gethin will be looking to make a statment on this big stage against a fighter yet to be named.
Dexter's Thoughts
It has been a long time coming for D'Animal, I remember interviewing him when Tommy Langford was champ and Robinson wanting to fight for this title then. He has been mandatory for a while now and is a well deserved challenger but I have to say this will be a challenge for him. Williams has been fighting at a very high level and should be knocking on the door of the world champions. At 35 this will probably be Robinson’s last chance at fighting for the British but I doubt he has came this far to fail. He has a mountain to climb but if the D’Animal can feast and win the British and beat Williams he will be propelled up the world rankings and could even get a world title shot. Robinson has nothing to lose and everything to gain, the Column will be looking to get an interview with D'Animal in the next few weeks.
