Summers Get's English Title Shot

Updated: Nov 20, 2020

Ricky Summers has been give the opportunity to fight for the English Light Heavyweight title with the date still to be confirmed. Summers (33) will be taking on current holder Daniel Azeez (31) from Lewisham South London who is currently unbeaten in 12 contests. Azeez won the English title in December of 2019 beating Lawrence Osueke on points, he then defended it against Andre Sterling in September winning by TKO in the 9th round. Summers who has won 17 contests and drew 1 in 20 fights has not fought since December of 2019 after stopping Raimonds Sniedze in the third round. If challenging for the English title was not enough this fight will also be an eliminator for the British Light Heavyweight title which is currently held by Birmingham’s Shakan Pitters.

I contacted Ricky and got to ask him a few questions, I asked him, how did you feel when you heard about the fight? He told me “I’ve knew about the fight for a while and was happy to be back fighting for titles”. I then asked Summers did he know anything about his opponent? He told me “yes I have had my eyes on him for a while he is a good all rounder”. My next question was, how has training gone? Ricky said “Training is going well just been training once a day maintaining things and keeping consistent”. I then asked him how he thought the fight would go? He said “It will be a good fight for the fans with a summers win”.

My final question for the Digger was, how do yo feel about potentially fighting Shakan Pitters for the British title? Ricky told me “it is what it is Shakan is a good friend and a good fighter we will have to just put our friendship aside for the night if we do fight as the British title is my dream”.

Dexter’s Thought’s

It’s great to hear that Ricky has got a shot at the English title, I have followed his training on social media though lockdown and know he will be more than ready for this challenge. I’m not going to say this is going to be easy as his opponent Azeez is unbeaten, the champ and has beaten some decent fighters. Summers has more experience and at the age of 33 may not get this chance again, but I know from seeing Summers train and being at a lot of his fights he will be determined to be crowned English champ. With the added bonus of a British title shot I’m sure ‘The Digger' will be leaving nothing to chance.
