Edwards To Thrill Again

Jamie Edwards made an exhilarating start to life in the paid ranks, stopping Stefan Vincent in two rounds, and he is ready to go again on BCB’s stacked ‘Fight Before Xmas’ show at the Eastside Rooms in Birmingham on December 20th.

The 25-year-old from Coventry made his debut back in October on the Ryan Kelly vs. River Wilson-Bent card and left the sold-out crowd with a performance to remember. He was matched with Vincent, who had never been stopped and, a few weeks earlier, had taken the scalp of unbeaten James Francis.

On paper, it looked like a tricky start for Edward’s first professional fight, but it was clear from the off that he was too big and strong for his 32-year-old opponent and was landing power punches with ease. A right hand dropped Vincent in the opener, and after doing well to make it out of the round, the fight was stopped midway through the second after he took several unanswered blows, forcing the referee to intervene and waive the fight off.

“I wanted to take it all in and enjoy the experience of my first one, said Edwards. I have boxed as an amateur, and there were some similarities, of course, but this felt on another level. My supporters made a lot of noise, and in a packed venue, they really made themselves heard.

“In the buildup, we had prepared for four rounds, knowing how tough Stefan was, so to get the stoppage the way I did, I was over the moon. Every fight gives you things you could have done better and things to improve on, but I felt like I followed the game plan. My corner said to stay relaxed and composed, but when I had him hurt and he went down in the first, I knew I had to put the pressure on, and I kept it up through the round. I took my time and picked the right shots. He was hurt, and it was a great feeling to get the win the way I did it, and it ended up being a dream debut.

Edwards trains at Triumph ABC alongside experienced coach Dinesh Darbar but is now splitting his time between his home city and BCB’s gym in Wednesbury as he attempts to live life as a full-time boxer.

“I feel I am getting used to it now, the routine, the training, and also having a lot of free time on my hands which no matter how much you put in the gym, you have plenty of it. My licence took so long to process, and I lost some months when I wanted to be active, so I am keen to push on and ending the year with two wins would be the ideal way to finish 2023.

“It’s a long journey ahead, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.”.
