Goodchild Can't Wait For Pro Bow

Connor Goodchild will have the “itchiest of knuckles” when he takes the plunge into becoming a professional boxer with his debut. His pro bow will take place at the H Suite in Edgbaston, Birmingham, on the Sunday afternoon of February 13, as part of a show staged by BCB Promotions. The 23-year-old Brummie, from Kings Norton, will engage in competitive action for the first time since his last amateur bout, which was six years ago. His amateur grounding came with the Pat Benson Boxing Academy and Benson will be there to cheer him on, among the crowd at the H Suite. Goodchild clocked up 40 amateur bouts under their banner, recording 30 wins, and reached a national semi-final in the England Schools Championships.

After leaving school, he became a dad-of-two and started working full-time, but the boxing builder couldn’t resist the urge to chase his sporting aspirations again. He’s linked up with father-and-son duo Spencer McCracken Snr and Jnr, who are taking care of him as manager and coach respectively. Goodchild will be campaigning in the welterweight division, where he’s planning to make a big splash and start challenging for titles again.

He’s been backed by sponsor Junkie’s Waste Removal, of Belchers Lane near Yardley Green in Birmingham, with his medical costs for turning pro. Goodchild said: “My camp has gone great, I’ve loved being back in training. I started over December, it was a New Year’s resolution come early and it carried on over Christmas. “I’m enjoying working with my new team, I’ve got everything that I need in-house. I saw them on Instagram, I sent them a message and we have gone from there. “I’ve had a long break, I was 17 the last time I boxed, becoming an adult got in the way really. My first of two sons was born when I was 18 and I’m still working in the building trade. “It’s always been in my heart and mindset to turn pro, though, and I don’t want to waste the potential that I have. I have goals that I still want to achieve. “I just need to get back in there now and I feel more than ready to go. It’s exciting to be jumping into a pro career. I’m up for causing carnage! “I’ve got the pedigree, I can use my skills to pick my shots and move my feet, but I’m a man now, too, so the punching power from that is coming through. “I’ve always been game and I’ll stand my ground, but boxing is about hitting and not getting hit, so I’ll be mixing the two up. I know that I’ve got heart. “I’ve had great support, so I want to make the fans happy and keep them interested in me, with my performance. It will be show-time!” Tickets for the H Suite bill are available now, priced at £40 standard or £75 VIP ringside with buffet, directly from the boxers or by visiting myfighttickets.com.
