Stourbridge Boxer Jake Melvin took his professional record to five without defeat on the undercard of the Kelly v Wilson-Bent show promoted by Black Country Boxing Promotions. The twenty-one-year-old Markov took on Bulgarian Lliyan Markov (26) in a six-three-minute round contest at the Holiday Inn Birmingham (27.10.23). Melvin weighed in in this super welterweight contest at 10 stone 10 with Markov who has entered the ring thirty-two times coming in ten stone thirteen with Pete McCormick reffing.
Great power was shown by Melvin who was teeing off with some evil body shots and great combinations dominating the first round. Nice shot picking by Melvin in the second who went body and head well putting fast combinations together, Markov was trying to have a go but Melvin was in full control. Markov started to grow into the fight and let his hands go at the start of the third, but Melvin returned fire and continued to land good shots winning the round.
Markov continued to let his hands go and ask questions of Melvin in the fourth keeping it competitive, Melvin continued to go to the body and then head working behind a nice jab winning this round. Great jabbing by Melvin in the fifth who continued to land heavy body shots and now looked like he was tiring, Markov then stunned everyone especially Melvin when he landed a right hand which seemed to stun Melvin and land several more big hooks to Melvin’s head who took them well but I’m sure he was thankful the bell went to finish the round. I was next to Melvin’s corner with his dad Malcom Melvin ready him the riot act and reminded him to stay switched on at all times. Melvin came out with intent in the final round a really seemed to recover from the shots from the last round, Melvin continued to land big combinations as Markov seemed to have spent his energy in the last round.
Judge Kevin Parker scored it 59 to 55 Melvin, I had it 60 to 55 Melvin.
Dexter’s Thoughts
Great performance by Melvin tonight but he did survive a potential stoppage moment when he was caught at the end of the fifth. This will be another learning moment for the hot prospect to stay switched on at all times in fights but I’m sure he won't want his dad Malcolm Melvin shouting at him in the corner like that again. Melvin got through that moment and came out and boxed really well in the final round which was a great response from a boxer his age. His combinations and jabbing were great and he teed off with body shots from the first bell. He is still in my eye one of the boxers to watch and has titles in his future and I can see him going a long way. He is still in the learning process and is learning every time he enters the ring I look forward to seeing him nix again very soon.
