‘The Savage’ Contests For EBU European Title

‘The Savage’ Sam Eggington will be taking on Germans Abass Baraou for the vacant EBU European Super Welterweight title at Telford International Centre 01.03.24).

Smethwick born Eggington's last contest was May of last year when he stopped the unbeaten Joe Pigford in the fifth round on the Boxxer Promotions show at the Vitality Stadium. ‘The Savage’ has won his last two contests after losing his IBO super Welterweight World title on a split decision against Australia Dennis Hogan in Australia in October of 2022. Eggington (30) has won WBC, IBF, British and Commonwealth titles at Welter and super welterweight in the past and has also held the EBU European Welterweight title previously winning it in May of 2017.  Eggington‘s record stands at thirty four victory’s  in forty two contests with twenty of them coming by way of stoppage.

His opponent Abass Baraou has had fifteen contests so far winning fourteen of them with nine coming via stoppage. The twenty-nine-year-old won his first nine fights claiming the BDB German title in his second contest and a WBC International belt in his seventh contest before losing to Jack Culcay on a split decision in August of 2020. Baraou has fought over ten rounds eight times and has done the twelve twice.

Dexter’s Thoughts

This looks like a very competitive fight on paper for the EBU European Super Welterweight title as Baraou brings a lot of experience to the table in just his fifteen contests. But then you look a Eggington’s record and all the titles he has won and contested for at welter and super welterweight and you can only see one winner for me. Eggington has had highs and lows in his career that has spanned over twelve years and he has only just hit thirty. If Eggington does claim this title he will be back in the running to contest for a world title and fingers crossed gets a shot at one of the big four (WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF). The Column looks forward to seeing ’The Savage’ vacant in the ring and claiming the European titles .
