Two Stoppage and Points Victory on undercard of Kelly, Wilson-Bent.

Updated: Oct 29, 2023

There were three more fights on the undercard of the Kelly v Wilson-Bent Commonwealth Silver Middleweight Title fight that the Column is yet to report on, Kelly Wilson-Bent and Jake Melvin’s link reports are at the bottom of the page. In a sold-out Holiday Inn Birmingham, we saw a first-round stoppage a second-round stoppage, and a point decision win, with three fighters making their debuts. First on the card was Wolverhampton’s twenty-three-year-old Southpaw Brandon Bethell, we also had twenty-five-year-old Jamie’s Edwards from Coventry and twenty-six-year Conor Baker from Tipton. Refferee Pete McCormick was the third nan in the ring for all three contests.

Southpaw Brandon Bethell took on Birmingham’s Logan Paling with debutant Bethell weighing in 9 stone eleven and Paling coming in at nine stone ten in a super lightweight contest Over four three-minute rounds

Nice jabbing from Bethell with everything coming off it as he banged in big combinations from the first bell to Paling's head and body. Paling got on his toes and moved around the ring with Bethell targeting his body with nasty body shots, Paling succumbed to a body shot near the end of the first round and took a full ten count as he could not get to his feet. The contest was waved off two minutes and fifty-nine seconds into the first round.

Bethell wins first round stoppage

Next up was debutant James Edward from Coventry, Edwards weighed in ten stone one with his opponent thirty-two-year-old Stefan Vincent from Christchurch coming in ten stone four in a welterweight contest over four three-minute rounds.

Bright start by both fighters as Vincent had came to fight, Edwards started to let some hard shots go from the first bell landing a lovely one-two and dropping Vincent. Somehow Vincent got to his feet and the ref Pete McCormick let him carry on. Edwards moved in and landed some heavy shots but Vincent Road the shots a survived the rounds.

Edwards went on the attack from the start of the second round letting some big bombs go, Vincent to his credit fought back hard but ref Pete McCormick stopped the contest two minutes and two seconds into the second round as Edwards poured on the pressure.

Edwards wins Second-round stoppage.

The final contest of this report saw another debutant in twenty-six-year-old Conor Baker, the Tipton fighter weighed in nine stone thirteen with his opponent Stuart Greener (32) from Bath coming in ten stone two in a welterweight contest.

Baker used a nice stiff jab in the first to control the first round letting heavy rights go to the body and putting together nice combinations. The second was another good round by Baker who continued to control the ring picking nice shots to the head and body. Baker dropped some nice body shots in the third with Greener just tucking up and staying safe, Baker continued to box behind a good jab winning the round. Greener let some shots go in the final round with Baker now getting on his toes and picking some nice shots earning a share of the round.

Judge Kevin Parker scored it 40 to 47 Baker I had it the same.

Dexter’s Thoughts

Three great talents were on display on this great show, Brandon Bethell was very impressive in his one round debut stopping a usally very furable Logan Paling. The Wolverhampton fight brought a great following down with him and looks like he could be one to watch in the future.

Edwards showed some serious power in his stoppage victory against a very game opponent, he has the potential to be a big Hitter in the super light, welterweight division and could be one to watch.

Baker got to show his skills off over four rounds and controlled the majority of the rounds with a nice sharp jab. He showcased some nice combinations and good movement and should be very proud of his performance.

The Birmingham Boxing Column would like to thank BcB Promotions for having the Column at their show.
