Walker Wins WBA Title

Wolverhampton’s Conah Walker showed he deserves a Matchroom contract with a potential 'fight of the year' victory over unbeaten Hot prospect Cyrus Pattinson at the Utilita Arena Birmingham (19.8.23). The contest was the co-main event on the Next Gen show which was streamed live on DAZN and was for the WBA International welterweight title over ten rounds. Walker was taking on the much-fancied Cyrus Pattinson (29) who had won all six of his fights and had claimed an IBO International welterweight title fifth contest. Walker (28) has an impressive record of eleven wins and one draw out of thirteen fights with Walker winning a Midlands area welterweight title and contesting for the British welterweight title. Pattinson weighed in ten stone six with Walker coming in ten stone seven with Michael Alexander reffing.

Both fighters started fast and let their hands go from the first bell in a hard-fought round with Walker just edging it. The second was a great round of boxing with both fighters having their moments with Walker seeming to hurt Pattinson with a nice body shot, both fighters sustained cuts Walker over his left eye, Pattinson over his right. Both fighters maintained this high pace tempo with Walker landing a cracking right hook that put Patterson down. Pattinson got to his feet and carried on, Walker let his hands go and was looking for the stoppage with Pattinson fighting back hard and banging in there to see the round out.

Patterson boxed well on the back foot in the fourth and used his jab to keep Walker at a distance, Walker poured on the pressure and got some good shots in but Pattinson won this round. Controlled aggression by Walker in the fifth as he continued to pour on the pressure and was starting Pattinson down landing some big shots. Pattinson was put down again by a lovely left hook, he got to his feet and complained he had slipped, Pattinson saw the round out. Pattinson rallied in the sixth landing some big shots with Walker coming back well and Pattinson stumbled and fell to the floor near the end of the round with the ref counting him again.

Pattinson continued to battle in the seventh and banged in some cracking combinations, Walker returned fire but would have to give this one to Pattinson. The eighth round was an absolute war as both fighters let their hands go, in the second part of the round Walker took control and started landing heavy shots to the body and head finishing the round strong.

Pattinson corner pulled their fighter out in the corner at the end of the eighth.

Dexter’s Thoughts

What a performance by Conah Walker, he showed he is at a level beyond these Matchroom Hot prospects. I had talked to Conah a few weeks ago about this fight and he had told me that he was confident he was going to win this fight. Walker showed controlled aggression banging in educated shots on the inside to the body and head. Pattinson showed loads of heart but was never really in the contest as Walker put him down three times in the fight. His corner did the right thing by pulling him out , Conah was interviewed after the question on a Matchroom contract came up. Matchroom would be mad not to give him a contract either his massive following and his boxing skills he has the potential to contest for big title. The fight itself was a great sceptical and could well be a bbcolumn fight of the year, Walker and his team should be very proud of themselves and I look forward to seeing him in the ring again very soon.

Congratulations to ‘The Wolf’ Conah Walker
