Black Country boxing’s Jason Welborn has been given the chance to fight for the Middleweight Commonwealth title. Welborn (34) will be taking on current unbeaten Commonwealth champ Felix Cash (12-0) on Matchrooms ‘Fight Camp’ show 3 in Eddie Hearns Matchrooms HQ's back garden on the 14th August 2020 to be aired live on Sky sports. Welborn is a former British Middleweight champion after beating Tommy Langford in two epic fights in 2018 he has also challenged for the WBA, IBF and IBO super Welterweight world titles losing to the world class Jarret Hurd. In his last fight Welborn challenged for the vacant Super Welterweight Commonwealth title losing on a TKO defeat to unbeaten James Metcalf (19-0). Cash (27) will be the home fighter as he is signed by Matchroom and will be looking to extend his unbeaten record, but you can not underestimate Welborn at Middleweight, Just ask Tommy Langford.
Also on this cracking show is a great female fight with BcB's ‘Ginger Matador’ Rachel Ball (5-1) taking on the unbeaten Matchroom fighter Shannon Courtenay (5-0). The fight is scheduled for 7 three minute rounds, Ball (29) is the current mandatory for the super Featherweight Commonwealth title and will be looking to make a big statement against the Matchroom starlet Courtenay (27).
Dexter’s Thoughts
The Midlands will be well represented in these behind close doors Fight Camps to be aired on live Sky Sports over July and August. I have a funny feeling that Cash is thinking he is going to have a easy time with Welborn as he has lost his last 2 fights, but at Middleweight I really don’t that is the case. If Welborn can produce the same kind of performance that he did against Langford twice and in his defeat against the Hurd, he could very well add the Commonwealth title to his trophy cabinet.
As for the Ginger Matador’ I honestly think she will win this fight in style. Courtenay may well be unbeaten but I do not think she would have fought anyone of the standard of Rachel Ball, I am really looking forward to watching these great shows Matchroom are putting on.
