Gully Powar's his way to Win Number Five

Twenty-year-old Gully Powar showcased his skills in his first six-round contest at the Hangar Venue Wolverhampton (14.7.23). The unbeaten fighter moved his record to five without defeat when he took on the experienced veteran Journeyman Liam Richards in the main event on the Black Country Boxing Promotions show. This was the second time Powar had fought Richards who has fought over one hundred times in his career. The fight was in the Super Featherweight division with Powar weighing in nine stone ten with Richards coming in nine stone twelve with Kevin Parker reffing.

Powar came out fast in the first round letting combination after combination go going to the head and body while Richards could only cover up and move away. Powar continued to let his hands go in the second, Richards was using every ounce of his journeyman skills to stay in there. Some of the shots landed in this round would have ended most fighters at this weight. Powar continued to bang in heavy shots to Richards head and body but was now measuring them, how Richards saw the round out is a tribute to the veteran.

Powar came out again with intent in the fourth and landed body shots after body shots while Richards covered up and moved away. Richards got on his toes in the fifth and was just looking to stay out of the way, Powar’s punch rate had gone down but was still more than enough to keep Richards covering up. Powar poured on the pressure as Richards was in full survival mode in the final round, Richards used all the tricks in the book to some joy seeing the final bell as Powar hit him with every shot in the book.

Ref Keven Parker scored the fight 60 to 54 I had it the same.

Dexter’s Thoughts

Fantastic performance by Powar who showcased his talents over six rounds for the first time. His work-rate over six rounds was great and even in the fifth and the sixth, his work-rate was high. He gave the veteran Journeyman Liam Richards property beat down and how Richards lasted the six rounds is a tribute to him. After seeing this fight in my opinion Powar needs a step up in opponent and maybe gave another six then an eight before challenging for a Midlands area title which at the moment is vacant. Powar is a very talented fighter and needs to be tested and at just twenty years old anything is possible for this Wolverhampton boxer. I am looking forward to seeing how far this talented fighter can go,
