Gully, Powers beats Tough Mexican

Updated: Jun 12, 2023

Wolverhampton’s Twenty-year-old Gully Powar was given a big test against the tough Mexican fighter Hector Lozano at the Hangar Event Centre Wolverhampton (29.4.23). Powar was having the fourth contest of his unbeaten career in the super Featherweight division. Lozano (24) who is over from Mexico for six months was having his fifth contest and has had two fights already on his trip to England drawing one and losing one. The contest was scheduled for four three-minute rounds with Powar weighing 9 stone 3 and Lozano coming in 9 stone 2 with Mark Churchill reffing.

Powar unloaded on the very game Mexican from the first bell who was having a go back and asking questions of the Wolverhampton fighter. Powar had the answers and overwhelmed Lozano to win the round. In the second Lozano went toe to toe with Powar who aligned him with the Mexican taking a lot of shots for his troubles as Powar continued to unload. Lozano showed the heart of the likes of Gatti and Canelo as the Mexican continued to stand and fight taking everything Powar hit him with, great contest Powar with Powar winning the round. Powar showcased his Arsenal of combinations as Lozano pressed and asked questions with Powar having all the answers winning the round and the contest in an excellent shut-out victory.

Judge Kevin Parker scored it 40-36 Powar I had it the same.

Dexter’s Thoughts

Massive respect for Hector Lozano for his gritty performance on this show, any promoters out there who want to test their young prospects he would be an ideal opponent. Lozano brought the best out of Powar who dealt with the hard-working fighter with ease taking shots but giving more back to win a shutout victory. The last time I saw Powar fight he boxed in a completely different style using his jab well hitting and not getting hit but for this fight he met Lozano head-on and went toe-to-toe beating the Mexican at his own game in an exciting contest. This was a great fight and the perfect test for the young prospect Powar who would have learned a lot about himself and his ability in these four rounds. Powar could have ten contests against journeymen who are just in it to survive and would not have test given as much as he would have been tonight. The nail thing is it was a very entertaining contest and Powar answered all the questions Lozano asked him and showed versatility in this performance. I was very impressed with Powar’s display and look forward to seeing him fight again very soon.
