Birmingham and the Midlands boxing is looking good after a professional boxing show at the Holte Suite Aston.
I was not at the show but was going to give the results of the fights the Birmingham’s and Midland’s lads had that night. I then saw Jon Pegg’s status on Facebook about the show which basically says it all. Jon was kind enough to let me use it for this write up.
Quick report on Our show on Friday at Holte Suite Aston.
Once again the fans were great and everybody seemed to enjoy the show.
Saturday was a special night as we had one of our original boxers Dee Mitchell up to be presented with a bottle of bubbly and a belt presented by our very own Sam Eggington on his retirement. A rock hard warrior who fought the best all over a Europe Dee was a credit to our gym and we all wish him well in his retirement.
Starting the action off Kyle Williams managed by Naji Al Harbi and trained by the team of Tyler Reece Shakespeare and Shaun Guerin took on a very good lad in Ian Halsall who always comes to win and was an ambitious step for just his second fight.I watched the first two rounds as i had to go backstage and they were great both lads throwing quality shots and really going at each other. I was told the next two continued in a similar vain and the fans were very happy with such an action packed opening bout.Kyle took the verdict 40-37 but Halsall can take pride in such a great effort and this is a fight id like to see over a longer duration down the line.
Next up was Tamworths very own Charlie Lee Williams trained by his Karl Williams son of legendary amateur coach Kenny Williams (sitting proudly in the audience) Charlie had some lineage to live up too.
After being a little frustrated at his last showing on sky tv where he was understandably a little tense we saw charlie back to his smooth fluid best against hard case veteran Andy Harris.
Harris who always comes to fight and is a test for any young pro didn’t seem at the races against the fast stepping Williams.
Indeed in the 1st and 3rd Williams to shake up the very rarely bothered Harris. Andy gave it his all but on Friday the speed ,variety and youth of William’s won out as he took a 40 36 verdict in what was no doubt his best performance to date.
Karly Gee straight back into action after the heartbreak of losing his midlands title took on Gloucester hard man Poochi Van Poetschie.
Starting slow and clever Karly picked his shots and kept Poochie on the end of his jab.
Warming to the task Karl upped the pace slowly and surely until seconds before the last a great counter dropped the hard as nails Poochie who looked in some shock.The bell rang before Karl could follow up but it was a very confident return for the elder statesman of Eastside gym.
Poochie messaged me after wards to say he’d never been hit with a harder single shot in his long career.Some compliment coming from a man with a resume like Poochies.
Next up was Chelmsly woods Ryan Kelly against the clever and durable Sonny Whitting trained by
legendary journeyman Johnny Greaves. Tall and fast handed Whitting was a real test for Ryan’s first six rounder.
With a massive following and a fan friendly style Ryan is looking to build on his recent TV appearance and his performance here will have done those ambitions no harm at all.
From the first bell Kelly threw bundles of shots and Whitting spitting defiance while under severe pressure for a lot of the fight.
The last two rounds were very hard for Whitting and i feel he must have drew on trainer Greaves savvy and experience to get thru against a marauding Kelly who was looking for the KO.
Whitting hung tough and went the distance where Ryan took a 60.56 verdict and learnt a lot from this fight
The return of the Don Broadhurst in the next bout don took on Stefan Slavchever an eastern European who’s no stranger to these shores.
After almost two years out with an almost career ending shoulder Injury don has a lot of catching up to do. Starting slowly using his experience to take the first couple of rounds. Broadhurst shook of the rust and by the 3rd was punishing Slavchever who was really feeling the power and pressure to the body.
Don saved the best for last as he almost had Slavchever out of there in the 4th and without him hanging on for dear life no doubt a KO win would have been coming.
With a 40-37 win Don was happy to shake off the ring rust and please his army of fans.Onto the next one as he looks to get himself back into title contention.
The main event saw David Coldwell managed Jordan Cooke add another impressive win for the Eastside stable as he boosted his ever growing resume with an eight rounds points win over a very tough and game Jordan Ellison.
Ellison who came to Birmingham to upset our very Louis Fielding a few months ago definitely turned up with plans to upset the apple cart.
Cooke shown a new found patience to go with his accuracy and power as he kept an increasingly bloodied and tired Ellison on the end of his hard straight counters.
By round six it was weather Ellison could get through or whether Cooke could do what nobody has before and stop the super tough north east man.
Despite taking a lot of punishment Ellison managed to tough out the last two rounds and told our corner at the final bell that he loves real fights and this is what he lives for.
Fighting words from a fighting man but Friday night belonged to Jordan Cooke as he won 79-75 and now pushes onto a midlands title fight in October.

If you also include the likes of Frankie Gavin, Mathew Maklin, Sean Davis and Craig Cunningham the future is looking good for boxing in Birmingham and the Midlands and I can’t wait to see how fair theses talented boxers can go.
