Gold for Birmingham's Galal Yafia

Gold for Birmingham's Galal Yafia

Birmingham amateur boxer Galal Yafai has triumphed in the Commonwealth games in the Gold coast Australia by claiming the gold medal in the super – flyweight division. Galal (25) is the youngest of the three boxing brothers, his oldest brother Kal is unbeaten as a professional and is the current WBA super – flyweight Champion, Gamel is also a pro boxer and is the former WBC international super Bantamweight champion Galal who also competed in the Olympics in Rio 2016 has said that his Commonwealth gold medal Win on a split-decision against Amit from India gives him something his brothers have never done.

He said "They haven't won the Commonwealths so it's something I've got over them.”

Galal continued "I should have been European champion as well, but I can rectify that in the future." He finished by saying "We're not really that competitive as brothers, I just do my own thing really." Gold was especially satisfying for Yafai after the disappointment of taking a contentious silver at the European Championships last year.

Dexter’s Thoughts

Galal has completed another big achievement for the Yafia family, Britain and of course there home town of Birmingham. These 3 brothers from Mosley are great ambassadors for Birmingham and British boxing winning titles at amateur and professional level and giving Birmingham there first WBA world champion in Kal Yafia. Now would be a great time for the youngest Yafia to cash in on his Commonwealth gold medal and turn professional, he may even surpass the achievements of his brothers. The Column looks forward to seeing what the future holds for this boxing family.
