Big Hitter Troy Jones in Seventh Heaven

Twenty-five-year-old light heavyweight Troy Jones took his unbeaten record to seven without defeat stopping his fourth opponent in a row. Jones from Birmingham was fighting at the Holiday Inn Birmingham city centre on the Black Country Boxing promotions show. He was having his fifth six rounder in his seventh fight career. Jones was taking on veteran Journeyman Harry Mathews who had entered the ring 95 times as a professional. Jones weighed in at twelve stone twelve with Mathews coming in a thirteen stone two with Chris Dean.

Jones controlled the first round with a sharp jab and some big backhands to the body, Mathews got some good shots off of his own but it was Jones's round. Mathews was earning his money tonight as Jones landed some heavy body shots, Mathews stood strong as everything came off Jones's jab.

Great continuations in the third from Jones who was landing heavy shots on Mathew at will, massive credit to Mathews who stood strong and adsorbed a lot of the shots. Mathews was dropped near the end of the round with an evil body shot, he took a count was up at eight with the bell going. Jones came out in the fourth with the intent to stop Mathews and let loose on his opponent he dropped Mathews twice with ref Chris Dean deeming them both as low blows and warning Jones to keep them up. Jones just went on the attack and mashed in a few more big body shots with Chris Dean stopping the fight one minute thirty-three seconds into the third round.

Dexter’s Thoughts

Really impressed with Jones's performance on this show, there was quality in both hands and his show picking was of a boxer who has double the fights he has had. His body shots were evil and with both hands and Mathews had to fold under the sheer pressure of the body shots. Jones was warned twice for hitting low in this fight, I thought they were on the belt line but the ref saw it differently. Jones has won his last four fights via stoppage which is no mean feat against journeymen who don’t want to get stopped so they can fight the following week. So, Jones stopping four of them in seven fights says a lot about his power. He just doesn’t have power he has great movement and ring craft and is definitely one to watch. I look forward to seeing him box again very soon.
