Michael Over the Mooney with Quarter Final Victory

The ‘Mad Man’ Michael Mooney notched up his first win since beating Daryl Pearce back in March of 2019 ending a thirty seven fight losing streak. Mooney (38) from Worcester was having his one hundred and seventh fight in the quarter finals of the TOP Boxer Tournament which was being held at Planet Ice Solihull (9.9.23). Mooney a have gloves will fight journeyman seemed to luck out in the draw when he was put in with another Kate replacement in thirty one year old Harley Marginson who had lost all of his seven professional fights.  Out of Mooney’s one hundred an six fights he had won nine and drawn two and three of his wins came via stoppage. Mooney weighed in Nine stone eleven for this four round quarter final with Marginson coming in nine stone eleven with Ryan Churchill reffing.

Mooney started the first brightly and let off some nice combinations, Marginson came back with shots of his own but Mooney won the round. Mooney kept up the pressure in the second and landed some nice shots, Marginson came back with some good shot but Mooney was just out working him in this round. Mooney continued his good work in the third with Marginson countering well, Mooney caught Marginson with a low blow which he was warned about, when the fight continued Mooney just out worked Marginson to win the round. Marginson got some good shots off at the start of the final round but Mooney continued to press forward using a nice double jab and a big back hand to win the round and the contest.

Judge Chris Dean scored it 39 to 37 Mooney I had it 40 to 36 Mooney.

Dexter’s Thoughts

I am chuffed to bits to see the ‘Mad Man’ Michael Mooney first get his first win in over three years and move to the semi finals of the TOP Boxer Tournament. I will say the draw favoured him getting another replacement  in Marginson but you can only beat what I front of you which Mooney did. I have seen Michael box at least Thirty times over the last six years and he gas always asked questions of his opponent and gave them a good fight like any good journeyman should do. This was a great win for him and like any good journeyman he has already got two more fights penned in, in the next six weeks. He is now in the semi finals and will be up against some of the Midlands finest, but I do love a good Cinderella man story which is not out of the realms of belief as it happen last time. I look forward to see Mr Mooney in the semi finals later this year.
